About this part

A 1.9 mm E-clip fits a 1.9 mm groove, measured at the bottom of the groove rather than across the shaft. It pushes on sideways rather than over the end, which is what makes it the practical choice where the shaft end is captive or obstructed. The shaft itself will be larger than 1.9 mm.

DIN 6799 fixes the groove for this size: 1.9 mm groove diameter, 0.54 mm wide, taking a ring 0.5 mm thick, with at least 1 mm between the groove and the end of the shaft groove. Those are the numbers to machine to and to check an existing groove against — if what you measure disagrees, either the surface is wrong or the part is not to DIN 6799.

Those four figures come from Springmasters Ltd, who manufacture the part, and they are the only source we hold for them. Every other dimension table on this site is checked against a second, independent one before it goes up; this one is not, which is why it is attributed here rather than presented as settled. It is published because the figures are internally consistent — the groove is fractionally wider than the ring in every size, and the groove diameter is the nominal size — which resolves the labelling question that kept DIN 6799 off this site until now. Check them against your drawing before machining.

The neighbouring sizes are 1.5 mm and 2.3 mm. Reach for one of those only because you measured the shaft groove and got that number — not because this ring feels tight or slack in the hand. A ring that seems slightly loose is usually a worn groove rather than a wrong size, and going up a size to take up the slack puts a ring in a groove it was never dimensioned for. If your measurement falls between 1.5 mm and 1.9 mm, clean the shaft groove and measure again before choosing: dirt and old paint read as diameter.

This is the first size in the range at 0.5 mm thickness — 1.5 mm and below take a 0.4 mm ring. A groove cut for the thinner ring will not accept this one.

Groove dimensions to DIN 6799

Fixed by the standard, not by us. Machine the groove to these and the ring seats correctly; check them against your drawing before cutting.

Springmasters Ltd, a manufacturer of the part, is the only source we hold for these figures. That is one published specification rather than the two independent sources behind our other tables, and we would rather say so than let it pass as verified twice over.

Groove diameter d21.9 mm
Groove width m0.54 mm
Ring thickness s0.5 mm
Min. edge margin n1.0 mm

Edge margin is the minimum distance from the groove to the end of the shaft or bore. Cutting closer removes the material that resists shearing at full load. Full DIN 6799 table.

Check the specification before ordering

Retaining rings are dimension-critical. Confirm the groove diameter, groove width and ring thickness against the applicable standard for your application. Safety-critical assemblies need independent engineering verification.

Also sold as E-rings, retaining washers, E-type circlips, shaft clips, DIN 6799 retaining rings — all the same part, listed here by the shaft groove it fits.
